What is being delivered in the upgrade to Wauchope Public School?

We are excited to announce the Wauchope Public School upgrade is complete. The upgrade includes a new two storey building with 13 flexible learning spaces, shared learning areas on both levels, increased outdoor play area and new student toilets.

Which classes are being relocated?

From Monday 2 March classes from Kindergarten, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 will be relocated to classrooms in the new building. For more information, please see the school map on the previous page.

What are innovative learning spaces?

Innovative learning spaces are flexible and well-resourced so that teachers can design a wide range of learning activities to develop the skills and knowledge of students.

Will there be any changes to the school entrances?

Students will continue to enter the school via the Waugh Street, Campbell Street and Mackay Street entrances. Please see the school access map for more information.

Will there be any changes to the Out of School Hours Care?

No, it will continue to operate as normal Out of School Hours Care.

When will the demountable classrooms be removed?

The demountable classrooms will be removed and the area will be landscaped during the Easter school holidays.

Will there be any changes to parking, staff parking or the bus stop?

No. These remain unchanged and will continue to operate as usual. The bus drop off zone remains on Waugh Street and Campbell Street.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Bushfire smoke - Advice for schools & child care centres

The North Coast Public Health Unit is advising people to take action to protect their health while bushfire smoke continues to affect air quality across the region.

Fine smoke particles are known to affect the human breathing system. The smaller or finer the particles, the deeper they go into the lungs. Bushfire smoke can affect all people and generally causes mild irritation such as itchy or burning eyes, coughing and a runny nose. These symptoms generally disappear in usually healthy people once the smoke disappears.

If your staff members or students have existing heart conditions or lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema or asthma, it is important that they have their medications handy at all times. Symptoms can occur for several days after this smoke is inhaled, so anyone with the above conditions needs to be vigilant with their treatment programs.

It is very important to seek immediate medical assistance if staff or students do not respond to their usual medications. In case of emergency always remember to dial triple zero.

The following precautions may help to minimise the adverse effects of the smoke:

• If students have prescribed medications, the medications should be kept near to them.

• During visibly smoky days, it is better for children and staff to stay indoors. Close all windows and doors, and if needed, use an air conditioner set on the recycle air setting.

• Avoid student participation in vigorous activities and try to avoid these activities completely when it is visibly smoky, especially children with asthma, lung conditions or heart conditions.

• Consider postponing outdoor events such as athletic carnivals or sports days when it is visibly smoky.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Investing in our schools

The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over the next four years to deliver 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW.

In addition, a record $1.3 billion is being spent on school maintenance for over five years. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

Wauchope Public School

A project is underway to upgrade Wauchope Public School. The project will deliver 13 new permanent flexible teaching spaces and increase the school's enrolment capacity to approximately 750 students.

Progress summary

Works are progressing and the project is on track for occupation from Day 1 Term 1 2020.

Internal works are well progressed with internal linings nearly complete, painting has commenced and the joinery units are being installed.

External works have also commenced including concrete pours for some of the pavement areas.

Below is some information that I requested from NSW Health. If your child is suffering from flu-like symptoms, please keep him/her home until the symptoms resolve, and for 24 hours after a fever.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

A message from Busways regarding the introduction of seat belts in buses

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Busways has just introduced seat belts for passengers into our bus fleet. Several vehicles will be deployed to schools soon and more will continue to be deployed over the next couple of years under the NSW government’s plan to have all school services in regional NSW operated by a seat belt-fitted fleet.

By law, all drivers and passengers must use the seat belts in any vehicle that is fitted with them.

Drivers will undertake training covering seatbelt regulations and their responsibilities.

While bus drivers will verbally remind students to fasten their seatbelts, it is the student’s responsibility to buckle themselves in. The driver’s responsibility is to transport students to and from school safely.

It would be a great assistance if you can help by talking to your children about wearing their seat belts on the bus without waiting to be asked. It is just like getting in the car – if there is a seat belt on their seat, they need to buckle up.

New Front Entrance

The front entrance to the school will be closed from Monday 19 November due to water, electrical and demolition work until further notice. This is for the safety of students, staff and visitors. To access the school from Waugh Street please use the driveway near the staffroom end of the administration block. Turn left at the lift area and proceed along the back of the administration building and access the office via the rear door. See green dotted line on map below. The disabled ramp will still be available for pram and wheelchair access.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and flexibility with this change of routine due to the construction works.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

You may have seen the article in a recent Wauchope Gazette or on the website. We are desperately seeking a 4mg water licence so we can irrigate our back playgrounds so our children have the best playing conditions as possible. The plan is that when the demountables on the infant's playground are removed, we lay irrigation lines, re turf the playground for one last time and then add water.

Once we have access to bore water we plan to have a vegetable garden with seven raised beds on the back oval for our students to grow produce.

However, this is all just a dream unless we can source a water licence. If you know of someone who can help please let me know on 6585 2277.

SkoolBag V3 App Updates - What's changed

SkoolBag is in the process of upgrading your school's mobile app to give you greater control over the notifications you receive and the content which is shown to you.

This process is managed by the school and you do not need to upgrade your app. However, when your school instigates the upgrade, you will notice some changes in the app.

The details of these can be found below.

User Registration

You will be prompted to register with a username and password. This will enable users to save their Group Subscription settings across devices.

You will be sent an email address to verify your account, however this will not be prevent you logging into the app. These details will be saved to allow for quick access in the future.

Your account details allow you to log into the SkoolBag app on different devices and see the same groups and subscription settings. After logging in, you will be prompted to subscribe to groups.

The spray seal planned will be the final coats of bitumen sealing for these roads – so a further follow up visit will not be required in this instance.

Final line marking works will not take place until approx. 4 weeks after final seal dates – to allow the bitumen seal to cure before lines are placed to ensure the longevity of the linemarking.

During the works – the SPA team has been in contact with the bus companies to ensure that bus access through the works is maintained at all times. Additionally care has been taken to ensure that parent access to the school during the peak morning and afternoon periods has been maintained.

Parent Parking

Our local Council has contacted me and said they have recently received a number of complaints from local residents and parents regarding some parents illegally parking during school drop off and pick up times.

For our communities benefit I have included the latest fine schedule for various offences. Please abide by the road sign rules to avoid receiving a large fine.

One fine that is not listed is parking illegally in a disabled car zone. That fine is $549 and one demerit point. Please also be reminded that if you have a disabled label you need to have it clearly displayed.

I've also been informed that just because you don't see a Ranger at the school it doesn't mean one isn't in the vicinity making observations.

Please note that there will be two School Development Days at the commencement of Term 2 this year on Monday 29 April and Tuesday 30 April. The Department of Education has added the extra day State wide to assist schools with the preparation and planning for implementation of the new National Curriculums. These are pupil free days and parents are reminded that the first day for children to attend in Term 2 is Wednesday 1 May.

All Polo Shirts can be paid for in cash, cheque

(All cheque's must be made payable to WPS P&C Canteen)

or credit card.

If sending payment in to the schools Canteen you must have :

- Order form filled out

- Correct Money enclosed/cheque or Credit Card info

IN A SEALED ENVELOPE.

There are 3 sample shirts at the school canteen for size comparison (6, 10 & 14).

There will be poly/cotton shirt available-more information on this soon.

All pre-ordered polo's can be picked up from the canteen on Friday 7th

December between 3pm and 6pm by an adult or any date after that from the

Canteen. The new shirts will be available for sale from this time onwards at the canteen.

School Band Program

On Wednesday 16 November students from Year 2 to Year 6 enjoyed a band concert performed by the Year 6 Tacking Point Public School Band. It was brilliant to watch these young children play their instruments so well. I'd love to see our students be able to play a musical instrument as well and while the concert was on I was imagining they were wearing blue and were our children performing. I do know we have got some talented children who already do play an instrument.

In 2012 the company BLUEGUM 2 will be providing lessons on a user pay basis. Lessons will more than likely be during class time so children will have to make a commitment that they will catch up on work missed where required. Notes will be distributed to those interested students in the near future and I will attempt to place the note on our website.

It is also proposed that students who are interested and can already play an instrument attend a free trial after lunch one afternoon next week (day yet to be decided). Class teachers will notify children verbally of the day so children may bring an instrument if they wish.

Years K-2 Bus Safety Program

Bus Safety Program

K-2 students will be participating in a Bus Safety program on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st June, 2011. The program involves a demonstration and discussion about entering and exiting the bus safely and traveling on the bus. Students will also be taken on a short bus trip. The session will end with a brief DVD about bus travel, reinforcing what has been discussed. There is no cost for this excursion.

The Wauchope PS Girls Football (Soccer) team is now the 2010 NSW PSSA Girls Football Champions. In March this year a record 502 girls teams had registered for the competition. It has taken our girls team 8 months and just under 3000 kilometres of travelling to get to the final 4 teams of the competition. On Monday morning in Newcastle, we played our semi-final against Tararah P.S. Although having a slow start the girls were well on top and finished with a very strong 2-0 win. Both goals were very well taken by Larissa and Samantha. This meant we had to play Manly West P.S., a school of 750 students with a very proud sporting record, in the final. The heat and nerves again made for a slow start. Just after half time, Samantha scored our first of 2 goals. Soon after, Olivia calmly palced a penalty shot into the bottom left corder of the goal. Luckily we had Georgia Wh. in goals, as she pulled off a great penalty shot save, this kept our perfect defensive in tack. The team, the parents and supporters, the coach and Ms Reynolds couldn't hide their elation with their win. The scores of our 9 games created a unique record for the girls. We are one of the few teams in the history of the competition to get through an entire competition and not concede a single goal, a record we are all very proud of. The team consisted of Georgia W, Sheridan R, Olivia B, Georgia M, Jordan C, Emily L, Ashlee K, Samantha M, Chloe C, Zoe B, Georgia Wh, Kirra T and Larissa W. Many thanks for the outstanding support of the parents for motivation, transport and help with coaching. We couldn't have done it without you! Congratulations girls and Mr Baker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GIRLS SOCCER INTO THE STATE SEMI-FINALS!!!!

The Wauchope Public School Girls Soccer team travelled to East Gosford on Monday 20th September to compete in the quarter finals against Umina Public School.

The Girls dominated the entire game ending with a convincing win of 4-0.

Boys Rugby League in Top 4!!

Congratulations has to go to the Boys Rugby League team who reached the Semi-finals of the Classic Shield Rugby League Competition. Although the did not succeed in winning against Muswellbrook on Monday they need to be congratulated in reaching the Final Four in NSW and becoming Lower North Coast, Upper North Coast and North West Champions. Good work Boys!!!!!!!

Our Girls Soccer team played Byron Bay Public School on Monday 6th September. They succeeded with a 1-0 win to become the North Coast Champions. They're now in the top 8 and need to travel to Umina Beach to play in the Quarter Finals.

2011 Kindergarten Enrolments are now being taken!!!

All Kindy classes in 2011 will have a maximum of 20 students.

Students must turn 5 by 31 July 2011 to be eligible to enrol at school.

Kinder Start Program

Monday 16th Nov to Friday 20th Nov ~ 9.30am to 10.30am

During this five day program, the 2011 Kinder children will spend and hour each day in a Kindergarten classroom.

Children will be placed with a different teacher each day to help familiarise them to the school. Class lists will be placed on the wall outside the classroom to show you where your child will be for the morning.

Classroom teachers will have activities organised for the children, incorporating a variety of curriculum areas.

We ask parents to deliver their child to and collect their child from the classroom.

Parent Evening

Tuesday 17th November 6.30pm to 8.00pm

Parents are invited to attend a parent evening at the school to discuss classroom programs like 'Jolly Phonics' and 'Count Me In Too' that are used in Kinder. Bus travel and safety procedures, staff/classes and preparing your child for school will also be discussed. Enrolment procedures, uniforms and any other issues parents may like to ask regarding the enrolment of their child will also be addressed.

GIRLS SOCCER WIN AGAIN!!!

The girls soccer team travelled to Coffs Harbour on Wednesday 18th August to play against Narranga Public School for round 6 of the girls soccer knock out competition.

They were successful with a score of 6-0. Girls are playing extremely well as a team with all players contributing to this outstanding outcome.

They are now due to play Byron Bay Public School in Byron Bay on Monday 6th September. Girls Good Luck and enjoy yourselves!!!!!

Schuberts 7's Competition

Three Rugby League teams travelled to Port Macquarie on Tuesday 17th August to play in the Schubert 7 a-side League competition.

Results were as follows:

The 5/6 Competitive Team won all games so, progressed to the semi's to play Port winning 5-0. They progressed to the final and won against St Agnes 3-1.

The 5/6 Non-competitve team thoroughly enjoyed their day and won their competition.

The 3/4 non-competitive team won three games and drew one - coming second in their competition.

Congratulations to out the boys for an outstanding effort.

Nth Coast PSSA League Champions

Our Rugby League boys travelled to Terranora, near Tweed Heads, on Monday 16th August to play in the preliminary quarter finals in the PSSA Classic Shield Knockout Rugby League competition. The boys were successful with a final score of 20-14.

They now play the quarter final against Ross Hill in Inverall.

Well done boys and Good Luck in Inverell.

Our Girls Netball Team played Narranga Public School at Coffs Harbour. The final score was 33 to 11 - an outstanding effort. This means that we are now Lower North Coast Champions and will now meet Tamworth in the final 16.

Good work girls and good luck in Tamworth.
